“Taking Peace for Granted” by FACE

FACEは自身の絵について「皆んな同じ顔をして笑っている」と言う。
キャンバスには制服のように揃った顔が描かれるが、時にそれは福笑いのようにあべこべな配置で描かれる。
状況、構図、筆使い、配色などの基本的な構成要素によってその単調な顔に絶妙なニュアンスを生み出している。
しかし描かれたキャラクターたちは本当に笑っているのか。
あるいは笑ったフリをしているのか、呆れているのか、疑問を投げかけているのか、嘲笑しているのか…
一点を見つめたような目をした真意の読み取れない顔はこちらの憶測をどこにも着地させず、憶測は宙に浮いた状態のままそのポップさだけを明るみにしてくる。
このように見る者が思いがけず抱いてしまう「浮遊感」こそがFACE作品の一つの特徴だと言える。
FACEのポートレイトは「目が口ほどに物を言わない」のである。
映画や漫画のワンシーンのようなイメージにはもちろんこちらに物語を想像させる力があるのだが、絵に向き合ったその瞬間、人物の表情から何かを読み取ろうとしてしまう私たちの習性が巧みに利用されていることに気がつく。私たちは知らず知らずのうちに「提示された状況の奥にあるものを想像させる」というFACEのテクニックに引き込まれている。これは台湾人の父と日本人の母を持つFACEだからこそ強調された、日本人的な「空気を読む」感覚から引き出された絶妙な物語の伝え方なのかもしれない。
窓の外を眺める女性、目玉を落としたキャラクター、銃口を突きつけられた裸婦。
コミカルでポップなその絵の奥にどんなメッセージや示唆があるのか、浮遊感の中で想像してみる他ないのである。
今回は未発表の新作と師と仰ぐMHAKとの共同制作した作品も展示いたします。

GALLERY TARGET is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of FACE, for the first time in five years.
FACE says "Everyone is smiling with the same face".
Same faces, like uniforms are drawn on all the canvas, but sometimes they are drawn in humorous arrangements.
Situation, composition, brushstrokes and color scheme create an exquisite nuance in these monotonous faces.
But are these characters really smiling?
Or are they pretending to smile, being amazed, throwging questions or ridiculing ...
The unreadable facial expression with eyes gazing somewhere lands this speculation anywhere, and emphasize colorful and pop nature of his works.
One of the characteristics of FACE works is the "Sense of floating" that the viewer unexpectedly embraces.
"eyes don't speak as much as the mouth."
Image like a scene from a movie or manga hold strong narrative power, but when you face the actual painting, our habit of trying to read the facial expression is being used by FACE. We unknowingly drawn into FACE's technique of "imagining what lies behind the surface". This may be a way of telling an exquisite story drawn from the Japanese sense of "reading the air".

We have no choice but to imagine what kind of message or suggestion is behind the comical and pop painting in a sence of floating.
We will be exhibiting new body of works as well as a collaborative works with MHAK, who FACE admires the most.
