SAI では 2024年1月27日( 土 ) より2月18 日 ( 日 ) まで、アーティスト ・矢入幸一による過去最大規模個展 “Koichi Yairi 24,♯1” を GALLERY TARGET と共催で開催いたします。
矢入幸一はペイントと印刷技法を駆使する「技法のコラージュ」を用いた制作技法と多様な形にシェイプドされたキャンバスを用いて、一見ポップでありながらどこか静寂と繊細さを備えた表現で知られています。また、展示空間全体をひとつのオリジナルストーリーで紡ぎ、まるで絵本を読み進めるかのように構築される展示方法もユニークで、これまで国内外のアートシーンおよびカルチャーシーンで注目を集めてきました。
ロンドン、ソウル、香港、福岡そして東京での個展成功を経て迎える本展は、作家本人にとってのひとつの集大成として、そして新しい表現開拓の場として機能します。2つに分けられた展示空間は、ひとつはこれまでのスタイルに沿った、作家自身の生活よりインスピレーションを受け生まれた物語を軸に、挿絵の役割を果たすキャンバス作品が展示され、ストーリーのイメージを膨らませます。また、もうひとつの空間ではこれまでの物語を用いた展示とは異なる、印刷とペイント双方を用いた制作手法のポテンシャルを試す場として、より複雑で洗練された大型キャンバス作品が並びます。
プロセスと技法の研究を重ね発表される、これまでのスタイルと似て悲なる作品群は、心地よいカオスへと進化し、背景より一見すると真逆にもみえますが、不思議と現代を捉える対象の要素が超過した、絵画自体の意味を問う無対象芸術としても解釈することができるでしょう。

An intriguing aspect of Yairi's series lies in the way he constructs the stories that form the axis of his artworks, imbuing them with a spirit of exploration. These narratives are based on the theme of the discomfort that arises when Yairi inputs facts into his own consciousness such as Japanese and world history, chemical experiments, and the resulting phenomena. Born from Yairi's straightforward sensibilities and a commitment to the importance of "thinking from various perspectives without harbouring biassed thoughts," the resulting narratives focus on the unease that arises when assimilating these diverse elements, creating truly unique and pure outputs from the artist. The narratives crafted for this exhibition also emerge from this process. The story unfolds with the introduction of a kind, gentle, respected, and resilient king from a foreign country, examining the actions of this king from two different perspectives. With a liberal perspective and a depth of technique, the works invite the viewer to explore a new aspect of art appreciation.
The primary focus of this exhibition can also be placed on the unveiling of new large-scale artworks, making their debut appearance. In this series, which includes the largest work to date at over four metres, each work is presented as an independent work of art, differing from his previous signature storytelling style. The depicted images are examined to be deconstructed, transforming into elements of paintings to emphasise each technique, including printing patterns and brushstrokes, altering catchy characters into a new form. Through the exploration of process and technique, the previously melancholic collection of works has metamorphosed into a delightful chaos. Although appearing contrary to their context, they can be interpreted as non-figurative art that questions the meaning of paintings themselves, with thematic elements mysteriously exceeding those that capture our times.
